This page is still work in progress. It attempts to demonstrate what could be written here. It is currently under review by the study group chair. This project attempts to become the main site for information on the ICTM Study Group on "Historical Sources". This page will be maintained by the members of the Study Group. Study Group's Mission Statement

PURPOSE of the STUDY GROUP

Concentrates on any kind of source materials in history (written documents as chronicles, daily life reports, letters, treatises on music etc., notations, phonogrammes and older sound recordings, iconographic materials and historical film documents, excavations or other findings of instruments and the like, which may contribute to more knowledge on the history of orally transmitted music, for example to historical developments of folk music genres, bearers of musical traditions, local regional, national and international styles of vocal and instrumental music, art music, courtal and church music, as supported by extension of worldly power, religions and sects, trade, military service and actions, emigration, evacuation and resettlement, cultural suppression and foreign influx - to name only a few items.
